Limerick Charity Cup Final.

Monday, November 13th, 2017

Garryowen FC is very proud to contest the Limerick Charity Cup Final v Nenagh Ormond RFC, this Friday Night 17th November 2017, at the Markets Field.    There is great historical significance to this event, as our Club returns to its original home ground after 60 Years.  Garryowen FC, founded in 1884, retained the Market Field as its home ground from 1886 to 1957, before it moved to its current facility in Dooradoyle.  Along with our Club Sponsors, we encourage all supporters to attend the game, with the full proceeds going to support local Charities.

For the first time in a long time the 1sts, 2nds and 3rds teams were drawn at home on one day.  The 1sts entertained UCD in the UBL, the 2nds and 3rds played Shannon and Scariff respectively.  I’m happy to report that all three were victorious which was a great result for the club and all the lads involved in getting teams on the pitch.  Both the 2nds and 3rds remain unbeaten in their leagues.

The 1sts got the ball rolling with a super 27-20 win over UCD.  This despite playing for 50mins with 14 men following the dismissal of prop Andrew Keating.  The lads showed guts and character to stay in contention against a free willed UCD team full of running.  Neil Cronin kept the scoreboard ticking over with 5 penalties and a conversion, his only miss was a conversion off the post.  Not to be out done David Johnston chipped in with two very good tries.  A very good performance and a particularly good 2nd half saw us home safely and kept us in 3rd position in the league table.  This should put us in a good spirits for next weeks away game v Lansdowne.

Next up were the 3rds who played a big robust Scariff team in the Gleeson League on the AW pitch.  While Scariff proved a difficult side to break down the lads kept plugging away and earned a hard fought 25-0 win.  Great resilience and discipline paid off in the end.

Last but by no means least came the 2nds v Shannon in the Senior Seconds League.  Kicking off at 6pm under lights this attracted a good crowd and the players responded in kind with a good 40-24 win against a handy opposition.  Scoring 6 tries in the process, the lads set a high bar to maintain and no doubt they’ll meet it in future games.

GFC Scorers

T: Paul Clancy (3) Aaron McCluskey, Jack Kelly, JM Griffin

A very good weekend all round for the club.  Well done to all involved. GiG

Storm Brian made his presence felt last Friday evening as we faced Young Munster in the quarter final of the Munster Senior Cup.  High winds and rain affected the game but not the large turnout for the most traditional competition in Munster rugby.  The cup brings out the best in all clubs and in a tough battle we emerged 19-16 winners on the night.  Cork Con await us in the semis.

Our U20s had another good win on Saturday against local rivals UL Bohs.  Trailing 8-5 at half time the lads rolled up the sleeves and finished as 11-31 winners scoring 5 tries and ensuring a bonus point win.
