“Our hearts so stout have brought us fame
for soon 'tis known from whence we came
where e'er we go they dread the name
of Garryowen in glory”

Message from the President

It is with a profound sense of honour and pride, that I take over as President of Garryowen FC in its 134th Year. The sentiment however, is tinged with sadness due to the passing of our elected president, Paul O’Byrne on 22nd May 2017.  Paul was an highly-respected Consultant Surgeon, based in Barringtons Hospital.  His leadership and affable character will be sorely missed by the Garryowen FC Family.

Ar dheis de go raibh an anam

Following some tough years both on and off the field, there is a general sense that we have turned a corner in Dooradoyle.  Our Senior squad is led once again by Conan Doyle as Director of Rugby, ably assisted by both Paul Neville and John Staunton.  Recruitment has gone well in the off season and we are upbeat that the coming season will see us, once again, competing for honors, across all major club competitions.  To this end, I wish them every success

Staying with the Senior Club, last season was very successful for both our J2 and Under 20 Squads, with a virtually clean sweep of all available trophies.  It is encouraging to see that many of the players from these squads are now pushing forward for inclusion in the first team setup.  There is a steady supply of new talent emerging from both our under-age structure and new member registrations.  I wish our Seconds, Thirds and Under 20 management, coaches and players, an enjoyable and successful season.

Our Under-Age structure under the direction of Michael Power, continues to grow with over 550 players competing across all age groups, on any given weekend.   This would not be possible without the assistance of our wide group of volunteers, who are involved in coaching, admin and fundraising activities throughout the season. A huge degree of gratitude goes out to these members.

Over the Summer period, Tom Fogarty once again, ran the highly successful Youth Athletic Development Camp, in conjunction with Setanta College, the leading educational institute in Performance Science, Strength and Conditioning.

A special word of thanks to our title sponsor Quattro Plant, who are now in their second year. Much appreciation is also extended to our additional sponsors; Medicare, First Choice Financial Services, Downes Solicitors, Frank Hogan Motors and Asystec. I would also like to thank all those who advertise with pitch side hoarding, those who support our fund-raising events and attend our pre-match lunches. I would also like to thank everyone who took part in, or supported, the Garryowen FC Golf Classic.

Finally, it gives me immense pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to all visiting teams, coaches, members and club executives.  I trust your trip to Dooradoyle will be an enjoyable one. I look forward to meeting you before and after the game in our clubhouse.

Yours in Rugby

Tony O’Rourke
