Dear Fellow  Member,

On behalf of everyone in Garryowen I would like to wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas and every blessing in 2021.  May it be a peaceful and prosperous New Year for each of you.

Without a doubt 2020 has been a challenging and difficult year for Garryowen both financially and operationally. Throughout these difficult days our members have been a huge help and I would like to sincerely thank each of you for your continued support throughout the year which is valued and deeply  appreciated.

Challenges aside we have shown great resilience.  On the playing front we performed exceptionally up to the time the season was cut short due to the pandemic and our 1st XV were well placed to secure a home semi-final in the All Ireland league. We salute our senior team captain Kevin and his team, Conan and the coaches and the backroom team for their outstanding commitment.  The tremendous rugby they played gave us all huge enjoyment and a great boost during the season. In addition to this congratulations to our 3rd XV who won the Gleeson League in March and many thanks to all our players for their commitment in what has been a very difficult year

We are also enthused by the ongoing success of our underage rugby on Sunday mornings which brings children and families together to enjoy the game we love while promoting health and fitness.  We currently have over 300 players participating in our underage grades.  These young players are the future of our club and to our underage committee along with all the coaches and mentors who are working with the next generation – thank you

During the pandemic, exercise has never been more important and as part of the upgrade of our grounds our members rolled up their sleeves to create the Blue Mile. I was overwhelmed to witness the effort of members of all ages during those long summer evenings which clearly demonstrates what can be achieved in working together.  This is a wonderful addition to our clubs facilities and provides a new walking area for all our members and the local community to avail of and enjoy.  Welcoming people to enjoy all aspects of Garryowen whether it is in a sports or social context is vital for the future of our club.  We are committed to increasing our engagement with our local neighbours and supporting the community.

With a deep rooted and proud history, Garryowen is one of the leading clubs in the country.   As we head into our 137th year our priority is to continue to challenge at the very highest level of club rugby and to continue to build strong foundations for the future. To do this effectively we must resource and fund our club by nurturing old and creating new relationships and opportunities with our current members, our sponsors and the neighbouring community.

We endeavour to improve our engagement and communications with our members, neighbours, sponsors, alumni and all other key stakeholders.  These actions will help increase membership and provide greater visibility for our sponsors.  As we move forward with enormous positivity, these improvements will continue to enhance and strengthen our club. To this end we need to draw on the talented skill set of our members and I would ask each of you to engage with us if you feel you can contribute in any way.

If you would like to become involved in the club in any small way please contact me directly at johnquilligank@gmail.com.

Finally, I would like to recognise our Executive Committee, our Trustees and the outgoing Executive for their hard work and commitment over the past twelve months –  thank you sincerely for your support.

Stay safe and well

With warmest regards

John K. Quilligan

President.
