U20s through to the DWT Final
Match Report from David McInerney
We had a great win yesterday in the semi final of the Donal Walsh tournament, beating Cork Con in Templehill 20 points to 6. This win over Con was the culmination of a lengthy league campaign where we beat Dolphin in our last game to ensure qualification for the semi final. The league was hard fought and our team’s biggest challenge was getting enough numbers on match day to field a team with subs. This reflects the number of u 20 players involved in our senior team and the number of u 20 players working at weekends. The great thing about our current squad is that heart, determination and ability are in abundance. The fighting spirit has been shown time and again with gritty wins or occasional bonus point losses when we sometimes finished matches with the bare 15 or even 14 players.
The semi final win over Con demonstrated what ability the squad has especially when bolstered with some of the u20 players involved in the senior squad. The team really gelled and played with skill, poise and determination. Two very well worked moves were finished off by Jack Mullany and Sam Gleeson. Peader Collins kicked both difficult conversions and two penalty’s to finish on a 20 points to 6 scoreline. A well deserved victory followed by some good camaraderie on the return bus journey to Limerick.
Roll on the final scheduled next Sunday in Tralee rugby club. Tralee is the club of the late Donal Walsh.
